| The _why_ I do this...it isn't the flames I get David "Daveykins FoxFire" Gonterman 09/11/02, 12:35 | 0 | Well, it's 9-11-02, one year after some brainless scrubs thought that it would be a cool way to get on Jack@$$ by parking commercial airplanes two thirds of the way up public skyscrapers. While I'll refrain from telling you what I think about the terrorist attack: You don't want the bad dreams over what I wish on anyone who as much as excuse this event, much less make them. Believe me, even the Phyrrexians would shudder at what goes on in my mind. And all this could very well be attributed to the fact that a router was destroyed in the attack, and it's enough for me to sic holy hell on *anybody*.
What I wanted to talk about is who it affected my personal life, expecially with the question of why I do what I do, namely make comics. 9-11 didn't change _how_ I do things, but it definitely did change the _why_.
It has to do with many other artists during the past (20th) century, those who had similar circumstances, although not as formidable as what we had last year. They all thought they could show a bit of light and hope in the much darken times.....and all of them are considered my heros.
For Walter Elias Disney, before his company became a corporate juggernaught and a popular target for my barbs, it was the Great Depression.
For the Warner Brothers, it was World War II.
For everyone who puted out an Anime Show or Manga Book in Japan, it was the carnage caused by the aforementioned war.
For Ed Wood, it was the budding stereotypes and pattern movies that show prefection in presentation but hallowness in substance.
For Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and all those who did the Golden and Silver age of American Comic Books, it was the turblence of the 60s to the 80s.
For those in Image Comics, it was all the Corporate Jugglenaughts and Copyright Legal Barracudas in the comic book industry.
.........
It's the first decade of the 21st century.
We have a group of people who flat out hate our guts for no real reason, with no justification from any deity worth my worship, and want to wipe us all out and whizz on our graves. And there are a lot more who'd like to celebrate, and excuse them for doing so and blame US for the attack. All of this, just because of the fact that we breathe. We will never find a point behind their actions. That, in fact, will be the point.
If I can tack my name at the end of this list I made..... _This_ is the _why_ I make online comics. | | Next | Reply - Reply With Quote | | | | |
